Eighty-five Maryland artists, educators, patrons and businesses have
been nominated for the Governor's Arts Awards sponsored by Maryland Citizens
for the Arts Foundation. The winners will be presented at the ArtSalute
Gala May 8, 2002 at 6:00 pm at The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.
The Governor's Arts Awards are the most prestigious honors given by the
state to Maryland artists, educators, and businesses that have demonstrated
an exemplary commitment to the arts. Presented by Maryland Citizens for
the Arts Foundation and the Maryland State Arts Council, the awards celebrate
the arts and demonstrate the importance of the arts and the arts community
to state culture. Awards will be given in five categories: individual
artist, arts educator, arts patron, small business and large business.
A distinguished panel of judges with experience in various artistic disciplines
reviews the nominations, which are received from people throughout the
state.
"We are very proud of the dedicated and talented arts community
in Maryland," says George W. Johnston, chair of Maryland Citizens
for the Arts. "These awards will serve as a shining light for those
who have toiled over the years and as an inspiration for young artist
across the state." The winners will be announced early this month.
More than 600 business leaders, government officials and members of the
arts community are expected to attend the gala. Lisa Simione, formerly
of National Public Radio will serve as the emcee. Comcast, Lockheed Martin,
The Rouse Company Foundation, Constellation Energy Group, the Maryland
Arts Council and T. Rowe Price Associates Foundation Inc. are among sponsors
of this year's event.
Located in Ellicott City, Maryland Citizens for the Arts Foundation
is dedicated to increasing public recognition and support of the arts
in Maryland. It is the companion organization to Maryland Citizens for
the Arts, the only statewide organization that works on behalf of all
Maryland's arts organizations to promote adequate funding for the Maryland
State Arts Council and support funding for the arts at the federal level.
