No doubt, you've read the newspapers, which have reported the "rollercoaster ride" of events that characterized this year's Legislative Session. The Governor had to cut $250 million out of the budget before it was even submitted to the General Assembly, and due to continued state revenue shortfalls, the legislature had to reduce the budget by another $275 million. However, due to continued vigilance and persistent efforts by many committed members of MCA and the broader arts community, not one penny was cut from the Maryland State Arts Council budget OR the $1.3 million increase. It's a significant accomplishment in light of the events of the past few months
Clearly, the time that MCA members invested, from the advocates at MD Arts Day, to the testifiers in the hearings, to the individuals who made personal visits and calls to their elected officials, produced a superlative outcome. A huge debt of gratitude is owed also to members of both the Senate Budget and Tax and House Appropriations Committees, whose steadfast support of the arts was evident in their responses to our requests and their collective decisions. At every opportunity, we should express our appreciation for their efforts.
We want to thank all of you; your involvement and support helped to ensure the future of the arts in Maryland.
